Matt’s Family

M

Matthew had a somewhat non-traditional upbringing and because of this he had an amazing extended family who loved him very much. His birth mother was adopted and battled addiction, which ultimately ended her life. He was the apple of his father Bruce’s eye, but unfortunately Bruce lost his cancer battle at an early age as well. After this, Matthew’s stepmother and guardian, Denise, raised him by herself. He was very close in age to his step-niece Aleesia and step-nephew Ruben and the three of them were together so much that they were just referred to as “the kids.” They all grew up together and shared many interests like Pokemon, WWE, horror movies, & basketball. Upon graduation from high school, Matthew left California and headed to the Philadelphia area to live with his step-brother Rick, his step-sister-in-law Jean, and his 3 step-nephews/godsons: Jake, Tyler, and Brandon. Even from across the country, he remained close with everyone, including his half-brother Jamie, half-sister Erin, and step-sister Marcey. We were also so proud when he graduated from A&M and several of us traveled to be with him for the ceremony. We were even prouder when he landed his full-time job in Texas, then became a husband and eventually a father. We may be biased, but he was one of the nicest people anyone would ever meet and he never hesitated to let you know how much you were appreciated! The world was a better place with Matt in it and he will be forever loved and missed!

We are eternally grateful for Matt…

After hearing about Matt’s diagnosis, I was concerned about my fiancé. He is about the same age as Matt and was having similar symptoms. Not long after, we scheduled a colonoscopy for him, just to be safe. During the procedure, the doctor discovered a large rectal tumor, and he was diagnosed with stage 2 colorectal cancer. He is currently scheduled to undergo surgery later this month. Had it not been for Matt’s story, he probably would have continued to ignore the symptoms. We are eternally grateful for Matt and the opportunity given to save my fiancé’s life.
